in 2003, Gibson introduced the "Faded" SG special line, and (as often happens with Gibson products) the earliest examples were built to a much higher standard than the mass produced instruments that would follow. The original '03 guitars were notable for neck features that would never be repeated in later years, consisting of an ebony fretboard, with beautiful pearl inlays in the shape of crescent moons. In addition, the guitars were crafted to a much higher standard. Grain was better matched, the wood chosen was lighter and more resonant, the the color and finish work tended to be a lot better. But the particular guitar offered here, goes one giant step further. This guitar has a body that is cut from a single piece of mahogany...no glue seams at all. The grain is beautiful and continuous from edge to edge, and the sound is fabulous. This amazing SG weighs just 6 punds and 15 ounces.
Of course the SG has Gibson's time-honered Tune-O-Matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece and a set of Gibson Deluxe tuners with green keys. The all stock electronics feature Gibson's legendary 490R and 490T alnico magnet humbuckers with independent volume and tone controls and a 3-way toggle to select the pickups separately or together. The neck is nicely rounded in the '59 profile, but not too fat for fast play. The fretwork on the guitar is beautiful, and the satin lacquer finish feels like bare wood againts the hand. This is truly a perfectly crafted instrument that won't break the bank.
Gibson has always shipped the Specials with a gig bag, but this guitar is much too fine for that. I purchased a 2003 hardshell case to keep this magnificant guitar safe. This is the old school SG case with the black reptile pattern exterior, combination lock (still never set), plush charcoal gray lining, and the Gibson name embossed on the case. The original factory checklist and blank warranty brochure is included in the package. The SG can be shipped immediately upon payment.
